How to Burn Down then Clean Your Kitchen 101

Feb 19 2009

When I woke up this morning, the only thing I could think about was having a coffee. You know, one of those zombie like walks you make to the kitchen with your eyes only 1/8th open? Yes, that was me.

So, I went into the kitchen and I started to boil water. I went back into the bedroom to check my mail and about 5 minutes later I smelled something pungent, strong and smokey. Yes, you guessed it – the kitchen was on fire!

I ran towards the fire (I almost won a Darwin award). Only to realize that in my sleepy morning haze I had turned on the wrong burner and now one of our cloth element cover’s was combusting like a <insert Samuel Jackson’s favorite euphemism>.

Here’s what the kitchen looked like when I managed to get the fire out:

Note to self. Ensure you turn on the right burner.

Note to self. Ensure you turn on the right burner.

Now that the fire was out, I was left with the dilemma of HOW to clean it. I tried vinegar, soap, and good old fashioned elbow grease. None of them worked on the cabinetry. Then I thought to myself… suit = carbon. What get’s out carbon? A pencil eraser!

Low and behold the power of an eraser:

The power of the Eraser!

The power of the Eraser!

  1. I'm wondering…why do they even make cloth element covers…Glad everything is ok…xx Mom…

  2. HAHA!!!! You're luck that it wasn't a gas stove. 3 years ago when I was in Poland, I almost blew up my aunt's apartment. I though I turned the gas stove off, but instead I turned it to the lowest setting. You could barely see the flames. Then, I left for the day. My aunt was coming back from her cottage that day…..6 hours later. So…if by any chance the flames went out, the apartment would have 6 hours to fill up with gas. Oh yea, and she smoked back then. Lets just say I got into a lot of shit!!!!

  3. I've done that too.I made muffins when I was in university and we had a stove at the time where the switches to turn on the elements were in opposite spots than the regular oven. I put my muffins on the stove, and turned on the burning to make some other food. I come back 2 minutes later and my muffins are engulfed in flames! Call the fire department!

  4. So why was I tagged again? I remind you of something pungent, strong and smokey? That's nice of you!Hope you're enjoying Milan!

  5. I set my dad's kitchen cupboards on fire making toast a few years ago! I wonder if that eraser trick will get rid of those smokey marks that are still at home on the bottom side of the upper cupboards..interesting. Tip for all other difficult to remove stains: shaving cream. Oh yes, shaving cream is ultra-concentrated soap and works absolute cleaning magic!!

  6. You are one crazy dude!

  7. @Alice, I think it more had something to do with your eyes being naturally 1/8th open :P

  8. This is why I don’t keep flammable materials on my stove top

  9. You know, I felt like smacking myself in the face for just how inevitable this was.

  10. was it all done before shannon came home lol!!

  13. It was MOSTLY clean by the time I got home. I had to buy some heavy duty cleaner and do a more 'meticulous' job the next day. But it was a valiant effort honey ;)

  14. haha…hahahaaaa that sooo reminds me of my "lunch" once a few years back…i wanted vegetables really badly so i was like hmmm i have these…lets fry them and have boil some rice blah-de-blah….so i put the veg to fry…but then i remembered i needed to email some documents…so turn the hub to oppsite way (up instead of down) n run off….return back with a newspaper (an interesting article regarding feminist economists – go figure!!!) and without looking put water into the fry pan….ahhhhhh fireballl!!!! so spent the whole lunch cleaning the kitchen before my house mates return lol…..shaving cream certainly came in handy at that time…plus a bit of white paint lol

  15. Very funny! And how enterprising to use an eraser…
