A Birthday Gone Bad

Oct 08 2008

I have a rule – perhaps it’s better described as an axiom – that I use as a guiding principle for life. “Everything has a way of working out – even when you don’t expect it to”. Either I’m a hopeless optimist or it is just a good way to describe my own laissez-faire approach to life problems. Regardless, it proved to be wrong for at least a portion of Sharon’s Birthday.

How many things can go wrong in one day? Here’s an overview of Sharon’s day:

What went Wrong:

  1. Aunt flow came for a visit
  2. Her hair malfunctioned and she couldn’t decide what to wear in the morning
  3. She was late for work (for no good reason)
  4. The decision on her work visa was delayed for an additional week causing her to reorganize her flight and her working situation
  5. Her colleagues took her for a buffet lunch which made her sleepy for the last portion of the afternoon and ruined her appetite for our dinner plans
  6. She was sent home early from work – but ironically didn’t make it home until well beyond the usual time because…
  7. The subway was shut down going southbound from Lawrence to Bloor, forcing us to grab a beer at a local restaurant
  8. At the restaurant not only was the waitress horribly slow – but she forgot to bring an ashtray after promising to do so… 3 times
  9. Over a beer we discussed her day and had a snappy conversation or borderline “argument” over what to do regarding her work visa – putting us both in a general funk
  10. We finally got the bill and hopped on the bus. It took us an hour to get to Davisville station
  11. I felt that it would be best to hop in a cab from Davisville- not only did we have another long and expensive ride but the cab driver was also incredibly surly
  12. We finally made it home, and had to get ready to go out right away. Sharon had a serious case of “Idontknowwhattowearitis”
  13. Julia was coming down and I didn’t realize that it was a surprise so I told Sharon
  14. We arrived at the bar only to find it packed and completely inaccessible and we had to change our plans
  15. Our backup bar was Underground, which on any other day of the week has the top level open – today it was only the bottom.
  16. Natalie, took longer to arrive because she went east instead of west on King
  17. Sharon was constantly annoying me by asking me to add “what went wrong” to this list
  18. While at the bar, she couldn’t get her camera set up properly
  19. Passed out before we could indulge on late night Chinese food, which Marcel kindly dropped off for us at 4:30am on a Thursday night.
  20. Woke up at 8:16am the next morning still drunk
  21. Spent $220 at the bar

What went Right:

  1. Spent $220 at the bar
  2. Had a kick ass time from 11pm onwards
  3. Sharon had to leave work early the next day – always a sign of a successful birthday outing.
  4. Here are the pictures to prove it

Brandon’s rule lost the battle but won the war

Happy Birthday Sharon, you won’t forget this one.
